Believe it or not; the question around should I wear my mum’s wedding dress to my wedding, is a common one. It tends to go something like this:

“My mum wants me to wear her wedding dress to my wedding. It’s a gorgeous dress but I’d really love one of my own. I don’t know how to tell her without upsetting her and I obviously want her to come dress shopping with me. Help!”

First and foremost, you must acknowledge her request and how beautiful your mum’s wedding dress is. Just think how many memories it holds for her! And your mum is super special to you. If you’re thinking, should I wear my mum’s wedding dress to my wedding day; its because you have a special bond.

should I wear my mum's wedding dressAfter all, family heirloom dresses are not uncommon. Remember the Facebook appeal for the lace dress made in 1870 by the bride’s great, great grandmother that got lost at the dry cleaner’s recently? Of course; what a story! (with a great ending thankfully!) So we know the matter of fmaily dresses can bring significant emotion into the occasion.

If you’re worrying about should I wear my mum’s wedding dress, then ask her to come to dress shopping just so you can try on some others. Explain that you don’t want to miss out on the experience of swishing around in a range of dresses so you can see the different options out there. Hopefully as you have fun in a couple of boutiques, you’ll find ‘the one’ – and your mum will agree. The question of should I wear my mum’s wedding dress, will fade away in this scenario.

So what if she remains insistent?! Then it’s time to get creative!

Find a good seamstress who, with agreement from your mum, could customise the dress to add in features that make it your own. Could you keep the bodice and add a different skirt? Could you remove the train and turn it into flower girl dresses? Or do you think she might be open to the idea of you having a new dress and wearing her veil? With the trend for coloured dresses, could you turn it into something people won’t expect – and will be unique to you.

Talk to her and think of all the possible options before you make up your mind.

I’m very grateful to the brilliant Shane Webber Photography for some of the images featured in my blog. Plus, the image of the heirloom dress that went missing from the dry cleaning store was found thanks to a social media appeal as reported on the BBC website.
